Words failed Scott, and he searched for a witty retort, anything to keep things going in the right direction. They were waiting for the training to begin, granted a last time together before things got real. If this was their final moment before being crushed by a gargantuan aquatic space lizard, it needed to be good.
“Xero is a hero, and without him the Earth doesn’t stand a chance. Sure, the Peterplankton is out there, gulping up the gyres, breaking down the ocean plastic, but the wheels are in motion. Rivers of waste are still flowing. Glaciers of garbage are piling up. Forests of concrete and glass and steel are emerging, the cities spread, and the roads and wires tie and bind the land. If something isn’t done, the entire Earth we call home will be tied up and twisted in a knot of man-made fantasy, with no room for natural systems to survive. We have one shot to lead the consortium and turn everything around. Only Xero has the power, and we need to get him back.”

Aga paused and let the words sink in. “Your heroism on Mowata and your victory here today pleases me. It is most comforting to be represented by reliable agents that protect our charges and advance the causes of the Empire.”
Xero took a knee and Scott followed suit. “Oh Aga the Magnificent, it is my utmost honour and extreme privilege to serve and follow,” said Xero, with words so flowery it made Scott’s eyes water. “We shall return to Mowata to lead the planet into the new age and foster the people to a productive and prosperous future in partnership with Hürantå.”
Aga nodded and became grave. “The time has come to show our love for the Mowatans. No longer will we be content to wait in the woodwork, masquerading as Gods. We shall present ourselves as we are and what we’ve been and bring Hürantån technology to aid in the planet’s recovery.”

The incline of the ship increased but still the craft kept a slow, steady pace, allowing the creatures of the sea to avoid it. A massive whale-like form appeared beside them, and Scott looked right into its eye. Connection blossomed, a link formed with this brief interaction of man and beast. Did the Hürantåguan impart animal understanding upon me? The life, this planet, would always be part of his soul, and he wondered if he’d ever get the chance to return, to study and document the incredible biodiversity of this fantastic marine world.
